The Chattanooga Magic Club is one of the oldest continually active magic clubs that is affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Founded in 1919, the Chattanooga club operated independently until it became associated with the I.B.M. in the 1950's. Since then, the Chattanooga club has held magic conventions, lectures, and promoted magic in many ways in the Chattanooga area.

Monthly Club Meetings - 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7pm East Ridge Retirement Center, 1417 North Mack Smith Road, East Ridge, TN.

Saturday Morning Coffee - 1st Saturday of the month, 10am at Panera Bread on Gunbarrel Rd. in front of Target, Chattanooga, TN.

Panera Bread will be the meeting place once again for our monthly Saturday Morning Coffee. It begins this coming Saturday at 10am at the Panera Bread located on Gunbarrel Rd. in front of Target.

The next meeting of the Chattanooga Magic Club is this Tuesday, January 18th beginning at 7pm. Our new meeting location is the East Ridge Retirement Center at 1417 North Mack Smith Road off of Ringgold Rd. in East Ridge. This is near the Cracker Barrel at Exit 1 on I-75. Once you enter the main lobby, go to the right and the door is on the left.

We will be voting for officers in 2011 as well as Magician and Member of the Year for 2010.

Next Meeting

The next meeting of the Chattanooga Magic Club is this coming Tuesday night, December 21st, beginning at 7pm. We will be meeting at the East Ridge Retirement Center (directions below). The church was booked up for last Tuesday and this coming Tuesday. We can also consider the East Ridge Retirement Center as our permanent meeting place. They have offered this facility to us free, in return we might have to do a few shows for them. We will discuss this at the meeting.

Tuesday will be a regular meeting. The Board of Governors will also present the list of nominations for 2011 offices this Tuesday since the last meeting didn't happen because the church was locked. Voting will be held at the January meeting.

JC Wagner - Card Under Drink

I was first introduced to JC on one of his A1 Magic Videos. Ever since then I was hooked. He was such a great performer. I was fortunate enough to meet him at a magic convention in Houston, TX in 2006. Here is a live video that I took from that convention. We talked JC into getting behind the bar to perform for the guests in the lobby. He was great as always.

One of our members sent in some pictures depicting the condition of a newly opened deck of Bicycle playing cards. He said, "Opened the worst deck of cards I have ever opened last night. Several of the cards were cut really really short on the long edge. They were also off center."

How often do you encounter these kinds of problems?

This picture shows how short the card is cut on one side.

This picture compares the card to a regular card.

Can you see the difference? Sometimes we open decks that are printed with the backs off-center, which is more of an annoyance than anything else. This time the cut of the card creates real problems and renders the deck practically useless.

Every month members of the Chattanooga Magic Club gather at Starbucks on Hamilton Place Blvd. for a magic session. Sometimes we have people visiting us from as far as Atlanta. Each month is different. Sometimes we do card tricks, coin tricks, rope tricks, etc. We show each other what we've been working on since the last meeting. Often, the sessions create new ideas to play with as people share methods and moves. We always have a great time. Have you ever joined us? We'll always have a chair reserved for you when you want to visit.

The Experience of Magic-Con

Over the last 3 years of my journey in magic, I have attended a total of 5 magic conventions. Every convention is a brand new experience. New friends are made, new sleights are learned, and the essence of magic is always in the air. Magic-Con, created by Syd Segal and Dan and Dave Buck in conjunction with Theory 11, was something much different, something magical.

At 4:23 p.m. my Dad and I arrived in the beautiful city of San Diego, home of the Padres, but more importantly the location of this year’s Magic-Con. After retrieving our luggage, we picked up a taxi and headed for the hotel. Sitting in the back seat of the taxi, I was in total awe of the majestic views San Diego provided. San Diego’s skyline, palm trees, 70 degree weather, and a beautiful view of San Diego Bay were all signs that this convention was something special.

We arrived at the Hilton Bay Front Hotel, and I immediately knew that I was at the right place seeing several people in the hotel lobby with cards occupying their hands. Going up to our rooms to unload our luggage, I prepared for my journey to begin. I then went to confirm my registration on the Indigo Level of the hotel.

Stepping out of the elevator, 50 feet away from the registration desk, was like walking into a new world. Many of the world’s top magicians were casually walking around talking to people. Passing by names such as Daniel Garcia, John Carney, and Eric Mead, I approached Jonathan Bayme and Dan White and registered for the weekend. It was humbling to be amongst such great magicians. After grabbing a bite to eat the festivities began.

I wouldn’t really call the opening ceremony an “opening ceremony”, instead, it was more like a relaxed meet and greet. Everyone was meeting new people and sharing magic. Free packs of cards were being handed out while a musician was playing music on a patio outside. Not only did I see many great magicians, but I was able to meet many as well. At one point a few new friends and I were sitting at a table on the patio showing each other card effects when something astonishing happened. “Show me a card trick,” a deep voice asked one of my friends. Amidst the joy and adrenaline, not a single one of us knew who this mysterious person was that asked the question. Again he asked, “Show me something.” He then sat down, and that’s when everyone realized who this person was…David Blaine. They proceeded in showing David Blaine a few tricks and then he showed us a trick before mysteriously walking away just as he had arrived. The last highlight of the night was something of great importance to me.

There was one main reason that I went to Magic-Con and that was to see the maestro, Juan Tamariz, perform. During the meet and greet I was able to meet Juan Tamariz and his wife Consuela Tamariz. There was a certain presence about him, an aura I guess you could say, that was simply magical. Meeting Juan Tamariz and his wife is something that I will never forget. Had the convention ended there it still would have been pretty good, but there was much more to come.

The next three days were jam-packed with lectures and shows. The shows were not just shows filled with tricks. Many of the presentations dealt with filming, lighting, and staging magic, while others dealt with creativity and character. All of the presentations were very eye-opening and inspirational. Likewise the lectures were different than those typically seen at a magic convention, and the overall caliber of the performers was better than any other magic event that I have previously attended. One thing that I found really nice was the fact that they allotted a good amount of time between shows for hanging out with other magicians and for eating.

So many wonderful experiences and events happened within the three days that I could probably write a book on the experience. I was able to see the greatest magicians in the world and see some of the greatest magic in the world. I finally saw Juan Tamariz perform and he didn’t disappoint my expectations. There were feats of magic performed that I will never forget and people that I will never forget. Magic-Con truly cannot be described using words. Magic-Con must be experienced.

The Best Kept Secrets In Magic

Family Magic Night

The 5th Annual Family Magic Night will take place Saturday, March 27, 2010 at the Chester Frost Pavilion. The show is sponsored by the Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Department and the Chattanooga Magic Club. The event is scheduled from 7pm until 9:30. Admission is $5 per person or $15 for a family of 3 or more (cash or check only at the door). Pre-registration is required - call 842-6748. Snacks will be served at 7pm and the show will begin at 7:30pm. Members of the Chattanooga Magic Club will walk around performing close-up magic between 7 and 7:30.
